    Exceptional

Shigetsu ryokan is always pleasant and clean. I love the simple, Japanese style rooms and the rooftop bath. Having simple breakfast available is a very easy way to start ones day. The location is perfect as one can just spend the day (or part of a day) right there and see the temple, shop and see a part of Tokyo and Japan that still has much of the older feel of shita machi.

    Fabulous

A comfortable ryokan with very hospitable people running the place. The rooms are nicely decorated. The breakfast is a real feast. And there's a Japanese bath on the sixth floor with a view on Sensoji's pagoda, where you almost forget you're in such a big city.

We had a room on the street side and there was a lot of traffic at night (i.e. trucks unloading).

    Superb

The staff were particularly helpful and friendly. The ryokan is well located in a picturesque part of Asakusa and very conveniently placed for access to public transportation. They do a very fine breakfast, and both my wife and I really liked the the wooden hot bath. It was located on the top story with a nice view out over the neighborhood from the window, with it view through a window on the top story.

    Superb

Very close to Kokufu-ten which was main purpose of my visit. Good eating nearby.

Room a little big small for a westerner.

    Fabulous

The room is comfortable and above standard for a budget ryokan.

For a ryokan, staff are quite impersonal. They also don't adhere to the curfew - one fellow traveller dropped his key in the reception on the way out; returning before the curfew he found the staff had already retired, and had to break into the reception to get his key.

    Exceptional

Friendly Staff, Rooms, Decor, Origami bird on the pillow, bottle of water in the room, location, indoor onsen.

Very little. Check out too early, bathroom a little small for westerners, but you get that in Japan, was alittle hard to find at first. No major problems.

    Superb

    1. Run like a traditional Japanese inn by a wonderful family with great respect for Japanese tradition, but also tolerant of western gaucheness. Choice of Japanese or western breakfast, both good. There is a public bath (like visiting a hot tub). 2. Fantastic location in Asakusa, beside Senso-ji temple (for sights) and Nakamise street (for souvenir shopping) where all the tours want to bring you. 4-minute walk to three subways.

    1. Even though Asakusa is a quiet working class neighbourhood, it's hard to find cheap places (for example if you want a morning coffee outside the ryokan) because of the nearby tourist sights. 2. Depends what you want - are you OK to sleep on a futon on the floor in a very small room, with very limited TV stations?

    Fabulous

It is a nice true Ryokan in Tokyo that is affordable. The best part is the location, right in the middle of a great shopping, eating, and temple area. It's also easily accessible off the metro and has great views.

It is still a bit pricey for what you get. But the location makes the place!

    Exceptional

The staff was great; they were always helpful and spoke very good English! It is very close to many attractions, such as the nearby temple and all of the tourist shops! The Tokyo Sky Tree was also about a mile away. The subway system was simple enough to figure out and easy to navigate.

The manager of the hotel was a little cranky and spoke no English and wasn't interested in helping us to figure things out. The last few days, the internet/wifi crashed and the staff was not able to fix it.

    Very good

It is in a good location for access to sights at Asakusa (temples, souvenir shopping) and Ueno (Zoo, museums) and also not too far from the Tokyo Skytree and the river for river cruises. The staff are very friendly and speak English well. The Japanese breafast is excellent.

I stayed in a western style bedroom and the bathroom was tiny, although this was expected for a budget type accommodation.

I couldn`t really fault the Ryokan. The service was very good and they could not do enough to help in whatever area they could. It was very clean and they were very welcoming. If anyone had a problem they did their best to resolve it.

    I can` think of anything I didn`t like.

    Very good

    1. The location is excellent 2. the Japanese breakfast is excellent

Ryokan Asakusa Shigetsu has a problem with bedbugs in its rooms. I stayed for six nights and after my fourth night, I woke up with four bites on my legs. I had read about this on the Internet prior to my trip after I had already made my reservation. I emailed the Ryokan to ask if they still had a bedbug problem. They replied they had taken care of this with a professional extermination service. Whatever "service" they used, it didn't work very well because the bedbugs are still there. I slept in room 302.

    Very good location.

    1) Small bath. 2) I had problems with check-in about 40 minuts 3) I saw only wall from window in rooms 1-4 floor.

    Good

Very clean. Generously-sized rooms for Japan. Nice shower/toilet facility. Comfortable beds.

Facility has a stated 11:00 P.M. curfew. I verified this 11:00 P.M. time, because I was planning on going out to dinner. On this, my second visit there, my daughter and I returned from a restaurant at 10:53 P.M. only to find the hotel locked and dark. It took several minutes of panicked banging on the door and pushing the call button to raise anyone (during which time a third guest showed up, also locked out); the woman who eventually appeared did not look at all happy to see us; she apparently had been roused from bed. For my part, I was not at all happy at the prospect of having to find another hotel at that time of night, particularly since none would be open in that neighborhood, and since necessary personal items (like my contact lens stuff) was locked in my room. For that reason, I must give this place a lower rating than I did in my first review. I would still recommend this place to other travelers, but with a big caveat.

    Fabulous

They take credit cards. Good location in Asakusa. Very clean. Comfortable bed.

Not allowed in room between 10:00 and 15:00, "for cleaning." We discovered that one morning when we came back from breakfast just after 10:00.
